Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to be a Latter-day Saint to enroll my child in Latter-day Academy?

Latter-day Academy welcomes students and families of all faiths. In fact, we don’t ask or keep track of what your beliefs are. Our primary goal in focusing on the needs of Latter-day Saint families is not to be exclusionary, but rather that all practices, expectations, and vetted, suggested resources are compatible with the principles and doctrines taught in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to a reasonable extent. Please see our notice of non-affiliation below, and section 10 of our Terms & Conditions for further clarification on this topic.

Is Latter-day Academy officially connected with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, or any other church?

Latter-day Academy is founded and governed by Latter-day Saint homeschool families. This strictly unofficial connection constitutes the extent of influence by or association with any church, including the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Is Latter-day Academy a private school?

Yes. Latter-day Academy is a remote, homeschool-friendly private school based in the state of Arkansas. Accordingly, we comply with all Arkansas state requirements regarding private schools including those relating to curriculum, staffing, methods of instruction, funding, and governance. For further information, please see the US Department of Education website for the state of Arkansas.

Can I enroll my child in Latter-day Academy if I don’t live in Arkansas?

Yes, with one important caveat. Because Arkansas state law allows for remote instruction through an established private school, you can enroll from anywhere as long as you confirm that you are in compliance with the laws and regulations around private school enrollment for your state and county of residence.

Can I enroll my child in Latter-day Academy if I don’t live in the US?

Maybe. Because Arkansas state law allows for remote instruction through an established private school, you can enroll from anywhere as long as you confirm that you are in compliance with the laws and regulations around private school enrollment for your country of residence.

How much instruction will my child receive from Latter-day Academy?

Because our goal is to educate and support parents as you educate and support your children, we leave the instruction of your children to you. We offer parent training courses, vetted, recommended resources, and consultation for you, but at this time we do not offer group classes or tutoring for students. By choosing which enrollment level is best for your family, you decide how much support is right for you.

Does Latter-day Academy Provide Curriculum?

No, and here’s why. Our goal is to afford the maximum amount of flexibility possible for each family. We know that no one approach will work for everyone. For this reason, we do not dictate methodologies, curriculum choice, daily schedule, or other specific details across the board for all students. Rather, we focus on helping each family refine an approach that best meets the needs of each individual child. Accordingly, each family will need to select what resources, including pre-packaged curriculum if they so desire, they will use on a case by case basis.

Is Latter-day Academy Accredited?

No, and here’s why. All of the 3rd party agencies that offer accreditation certification for K-12 schools are held to strict standards to follow specific government guidelines at the state and federal level. While we believe strongly that accountability is a key to success, we also recognize that many of these guidelines are in direct conflict with best practices in a parent led, homeschool setting. By refusing to be constricted by these guidelines, we can afford significantly more freedom, sovereignty, and tailored support to each family.

Accreditation in K-12 education is most relevant when it comes to offering high school diplomas, which we cannot do at this time. Please see further information on High School diplomas below.

Will my senior receive a diploma upon completion of coursework when enrolled with Latter-day Academy?

Because we have strategically chosen not to be accredited (see reasons listed above), we cannot offer high school diplomas at this time. A student seeking a high school diploma would either need to register with an accredited school, or study for and take the GED to earn an equivalent certificate. Since the pandemic, however, most institutions of higher education have adjusted their admissions criteria to allow for more flexible requirements.

Other options include completing coursework through BYU Pathway Connect, taking community college courses (in person or online), and attending a trade school before applying to a university. While a high school diploma can be beneficial, it is not the only path, and certainly not a required one. Just ask our founder, Todd Michael, who has earned multiple degrees and a teaching credential all without a high school diploma.

Do you offer SAT, or other high stakes test prep or administration?

Not at this time. In most cases, however, your local school district and/or county office of education is required to offer administration of these tests to any student living within their jurisdiction, regardless of their school of enrollment. You can learn more about the specific opportunities available to you by contacting your local county office of education and/or school district of residence.

What if I just want to homeschool my kids? What’s the advantage of enrolling them in Latter-day Academy?

We’re glad you asked! The families who will find Latter-day Academy especially helpful are those who would like to homeschool but are unable to due to a general lack of support, local regulations, or the disapproval of others (such as family members). The many benefits, however, are not limited to these families.

In addition to receiving enrollment with an established private school, gaining access to the world’s most comprehensive training for homeschool parents, and consultations with an experienced educator and homeschool parent, you will also be part of a larger school community without any of the restrictions, bloated bureaucratic waste, and government overreach found elsewhere. Enrollment also makes it easier to transfer your student to another school if needed, and gives you an academic record that may be helpful in applying to college or other educational institutions.

If none of that appeals to you, no problem! We’re excited that you want to homeschool, we celebrate that you live in a place where it is supported, we tip our hat to your confidence to tackle it, and we offer our support through homeschooledvantage.com if desired.

How many of my kids can I enroll?

Preferably all of them! Each level of enrollment, namely Stella, Luna, and Solis, has a base enrollment annual fee. This amount includes access to all supporting materials for the parents and enrollment for one child. After that there is a significantly smaller fee for each additional child that you enroll. For example, if you enroll three children at Luna level, it would be $450 base price including the first child, plus $150 for each additional child, for a total of only $750 for all three children the school year.

If I enroll at Stella or Luna, can I upgrade my level of enrollment?

Yes! If at any point you want to upgrade your enrollment level, simply contact us and we will give you a discount code so you only pay the difference. For example, if you enrolled in Stella for $250 and decide you want to upgrade to Luna, you will only pay an additional $200.

What if I want to change schools midway through the school year?

All enrolled students receive a digital proof of enrollment letter that can be presented to any school upon transfer. Additionally, those enrolled in Luna or Solis will receive a progress record at the end of each school year. If a student needs to transfer out of Latter-day Academy midway through the school year, a report of progress up to the point of transfer can be requested, and will be arranged on a case by case basis. Any questions from other schools regarding enrollment can be directed to: Todd@HomeschoolEdvantage.com

What if my family travels a lot?

Great! Because we don’t waste time with plugging kids into remote classes, you can teach from anywhere. We will consult with you on your general plan for time spent learning each week, but ultimately you have complete flexibility over your family’s educational schedule. We’re here to support you, not hold you back!

Are there time requirements on how much work we need to do each day, week, month, or year?

Because we are based in the state of Arkansas, we follow the Arkansas state laws around private school schedules, which allow for a large degree of flexibility. The specific approach that will work best for your family may take some time to sort out through trial and error, and this will be a topic of our initial consultation. In short, we aren’t here to count minutes of instruction, but we are also not going to abandon you to figure it out alone. We’re here to help.

What homeschooling methodologies is Latter-day Academy founded on?

All of them! Because you take the lead in educating your child, you can adopt (and adapt) one or more methodologies according to your family’s unique needs. We will help you consider what might be the best fit, but ultimately this will not look the same for every family.

What about socialization? If I enroll my child with Latter-day Academy, will they get to interact with other kids?

In order to support the maximum number of families, Latter-day Academy is a remote private school. Ultimately, as our school grows, it is a goal to coordinate regional meet-ups and other opportunities to connect with other families. At this time, however, we are focused on building a strong foundation for the school, and are not yet able to offer these opportunities.
